Hanoi helicopter crash: Black box found, death toll rises

Search and rescue workers have retrieved black box of a Russian-built Mi-171 helicopter that crashed in Hanoi’s outlying district of Thach That on July 7, killing at least 18 soldiers on board.

Lieut. Gen. Vo Van Tuan, deputy chief of General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, said relevant agencies launched an inquiry into the cause of the tragedy.

Initial investigations showed the crash was caused by technical failure.

Death toll has risen to 18. Authorities earlier put it at 16.

The helicopter exploded after hitting the ground.

The helicopter which was on a parachute training mission lost control shortly after taking off from Hoa Lac airport. The aircraft was said to lost altitude and hit the ground before exploding near a local market.

Local people help with search and rescue work

There were a total of 21 people on board. Sixteen soldiers were confirmed dead at the scene and five others were injured and admitted to military hospitals.

However, three more soldiers died in hospitals, and the other two were in critical condition.
