Pavement encroachment curbed in many streets in HCM City

People in many districts in HCM City have started clearing pavements after local authorities in District 1 led the campaign to curb pavement encroachment.

On  March 1, police in Binh Thanh District carried out a raid on pavement encroachment around Ba Chieu Market. Many shops and stalls that are illegally set up on Dien Hong, Vu Tung streets have been removed.

Local people and shop owners on Bui Huu Nghia and Trinh Hoai Duc streets were asked to remove steps built on the pavements.



According to police in Binh Thanh District, they carried out regular inspections on pavement encroachment but violations would soon still reoccurred. They would be stricter this time and gave fines to many violations.

On the same day, local authorities in District 3, Tan Binh, and Phu Nhuan also took action.

People removed bonsai trees from the pavement in front of a hotel on Phan Xich Long Street.

Police in District 3 issued fines to 12 drivers for illegally parking on Vo Thi Sau and Ly Chinh Thang streets. Many signboards, posters, tables and tools were also seized from the streets.

Vice chairman of Phu Nhuan District People's Committee, Nguyen Thanh Phuong, said that they've called on local people to clear the street pavements and had given them a week to remove or repair their illegal constructions.

The raid against pavement encroachment has been supported by local people.

A man in Ward 2, Phu Nhuan District destroyed additional steps built on the pavement.

“We've been informed about the campaign and were given time to remove the illegal construction ourselves, said Nguyen Anh Tai, 53, in Phu Nhuan District. "I think this is a good thing to do to make the pavements safer.”
