The meeting which was held by the Vietnamese Labour Federation in Danang City, was attended by some 2,000 workers from several key economic zones in the region including Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh provinces, and Danang City.

Chairing the meeting, the PM answered questions relating to unemployment insurance, social insurance, food safety, age discrimination, and further training, submitted by local workers.

Responding to a proposal by worker Nguyen Tien Quyet from Mien Trung Plastic Company to consider unemployment insurance for those who are on further training courses, the PM said that the government issued Resolution 35 last year to support enterprises in improving vocational quality.

"I accept this proposal and the government will use part of the unemployment fund for workers on training," Phuc noted.

Replying a question from a shoe worker in Quang Nam Province about the fact that many enterprises are not complying with insurances policies for workers, the PM said that the government has just issued an amended law on the issue which will imposed a fine of up to VND 3 billion (USD 132,304) and a seven-year sentence to violators.

Replying a complaint by worker Nguyen Van Quang, from Scavi Hue Company that some foreign companies are refusing to employ workers aged over 35, PM Phuc said that the government will pay more attention to age discrimination but workers themselves need to improve their skills.

The meeting also discussed measures to provide favourable conditions for local enterprises and boost economic development in the region.

At the meeting the PM presented 20 houses with a total valued of VND 1 billion (USD44,101) for workers with financial difficulties. Local authorities in Danang City also presented 10 houses valued at VND 500 million (USD22,050) to poor workers. The meeting also honoured and gave gifts to 10 best workers.

"There are about 2.7 million workers in our country but some 2 million of them don't have a house," he said. "The government has just approved on a fund to support local workers to build houses and schools. We have only VND 197 billion (USD8.69 million) and hope that more organisations and agencies will contribute more to the fund."

The Vietnam Labour Federation also signed agreements with many local enterprises to provide welfare for workers.
