Traffic officials in Vietnam are discussing with Mobileye, an Israeli company specialising in advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous driving technologies to equip local vehicles with their collision avoidance systems to curb traffic accidents.

A passenger bus is heavily damaged after colliding with a truck in Gia Lai Province on September 23.

The technologies were introduced at a Friday meeting co-organised by the Ministry of Transport and the Embassy of Israel in Hanoi.

Mobileye's collision avoidance systems is said to be enabled by a high resolution vision sensor that analyzes potential dangerous scenarios in real time, alerting drivers to impending collisions and giving them enough time to react.

The company's proprietary software algorithms and EyeQ® chips perform detailed interpretations of the visual field in order to anticipate possible collisions with other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, animals, debris and other obstacles. The products are also able to detect roadway markings such as lanes, road boundaries, barriers and similar items; identify and read traffic signs, directional signs and traffic lights.

Speaking at the meeting, Phan Minh Tuan, representative from Tekurrency which is Mobileye's distributor in Vietnam, said that Mobileye has shown positive results in countries with similar traffic situations to Vietnam including India, Thailand and the Philippines.
"We believe that Mobileye will also work well in Vietnam," Tuan stressed.

Vice head of the Ministry of Transport's Department of Sciences and Technologies, Tran Quang Ha, told the meeting that they are working with local scientists and transport and IT companies about introducing the Mobileye in Vietnam.

A report from the National Traffic Safety Committee showed that 12,775 traffic-related accidents were recorded in the first eight months of 2017, claiming more than 5,400 lives and injuring 10,543 people. The report showed a downward trend in traffic-related accidents, fatalities, and injuries against the same period last year.
