Phu Yen seeks post-storm financial support

The southern-central province of Phu Yen has asked for VND320 billion (USD14.5 million) in aid to address the consequences of Storm Damrey.

Chairman of the provincial people’s committee Nguyen Van Tra said that Storm Damrey had killed one person in Phu Yen, left one missing and injured 10. The typhoon damaged 14,561 local houses, destroyed 2,000 hectares of rubber, 3,250 hectares of cassava and 1,100 hectares of planted forest.

Meanwhile, many schools, health centres, irrigation works and roads have been also damaged. Sea dykes in Tuy Hoa and Song Cau towns have been affected, posing danger for nearby households.

The province has also asked the government to provide storm victims with around 300 tonnes of rice.

According to the Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention, 44 people were now counted dead and 19 were missing due to the storm. It said over 600 houses had collapsed entirely and 4,000 hectares (9,884 acres) of rice were damaged. More than 30,000 people have been evacuated.
