Trang, 38, will be in-charge of the social network’s business development for the country from the company’s office in Singapore.

Prior to this, she was CEO of Fossil Vietnam, which acquired Misfit Wearables founded by her husband Sonny Vu, a Vietnamese American businessman. Misfit Wearables, a startup specializing in keeping track of human health and physical activities, had attracted investment from John Sculley, former CEO of Apple, and Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing.

Trang’s appointment to Facebook has surprised many in the Vietnam’s startup community as it was expected that the duo would set up a new startup.

Trang won scholarships to study at Oxford University in England and then Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US. After that, she worked for global management consulting firm McKinsey in the US before joining Fossil.

The number of Facebook users in Vietnam is expected to reach 33.86 million in 2018, up from 29.29 million in 2016, according to Statista, an online statistics, market research and business intelligence portal.

As of the second quarter of 2017, the social network was accessed by 2 billion users on a monthly basis. Vietnam is ranked seventh among the countries with the highest number of Facebook users. Overall, the country has a 40 per cent active social media penetration rate.
