>> Helicopters, artillery to join Dien Bien Phu victory anniversary
Vietnam Airlines will operate three flights daily between Hanoi and Dien Bien from May 3 to 8, nearly doubling the current frequency.
The national flag carrier is the official transport sponsor of the tourism programme Visit Vietnam Year - Dien Bien 2024, of which the 70th anniversary celebration is a highlight.
Vietjet Air has also increased its frequency between Hanoi and HCM City and Dien Bien to 28 flights per week between May 3-11.
Dien Dien is witnessing a tourist surge at this time and many local hotels and guesthouses have been fully booked. Local authorities have called on local households to register accommodation for visitors and to date roughly 100 households have joined.
On May 7, 1954, the flag of the Vietnamese army was raised on the top of the command tunnel of French General De Castries. All the French troops were captured.
President Ho Chi Minh said that the Dien Bien Phu Victory was a golden milestone in history that directly led to the signing of the Geneva Accords on ending the war and restoring peace in Indochina. It also created the foundation and conditions for the Vietnamese people to secure victory in the resistance war against the US, liberate the South, and reunify the country in 1975.
