The central city of Danang topped the Provincial Competitive Index (PCI) for the fourth consecutive year in 2016, among 63 provinces and cities nationwide.

In the PCI 2016 report jointly launched Tuesday by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the city gained the top score of 70 points.

The Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) launch the PCI 2016 report on March 14.

This marked the seventh time Danang has led the annual rankings since the first PCI report in 2006.

Meanwhile, the country's two biggest cities of Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi, though both showed improvement, could not manage to make the top five.

The PCI 2016 was based on responses from 10,037 domestic private firms in 63 provinces and cities, and 1,550 foreign invested enterprises in 14 provinces and cities in Vietnam.

In the report, Danang was followed by the northern province of Quang Ninh and the Mekong Delta Province of Dong Thap. The two southern provinces of Binh Duong and Vinh Long were also in the top five localities with best management quality.

HCM City together with Thai Nguyen, Vinh Phuc and Quang Nam provinces also received positive assessments from domestic enterprises for their efforts to improve the business environment. While Hanoi, for the first time in many years, ranked well for good management quality with over 60 points and was placed 14th.

PCI 2016 showed improvements in performance by many cities and provinces. Compared to the 2015 report, the improvements can be seen in labour training, firm registration, unofficial fees issue and competition.

However, cumbersome administrative procedures, difficulties in accessing land and legislative issues were still the main challenges to many domestic firms.
