 >>  Transport Ministry rejects Uber Vietnam proposal
Uber Vietnam has just received approval from the local Ministry of Transport to pilot an IT upgrade for its services, the company said.

Uber's service was officially approved in Vietnam from April 10.

Uber Vietnam CEO Dang Viet Dung told local media on Tuesday that the company's request has finally been approved after it was turned down two times earlier.

In a document sent to Uber, the Ministry of Transport said, "The ministry gave in-principle approval for Uber's pilot of the application of information technology in supporting the management and connection of commercial passenger transportation by contract which will take effect from April 10. Uber shall have to work with local authorities in cities and provinces to carry out the project.

"We’re very happy with the ministry's approval," Dung said. "It will be a great support for us to further develop a modern transport service which is safer, cheaper, and more convenient for Vietnamese people."

Uber entered Vietnam in June 2014 as a foreign company operating in the country without resident offices. The company's first proposal to pilot applying information technology in supporting the management and connection of commercial passenger transportation by contract was turned down in November 2015 as the ministry said that Uber had not established office in Vietnam.

The company's second proposal of the pilot project early this year was again rejected by the Vietnamese government saying that Uber Vietnam's registered fields of operation were just “managerial activities” and “market research”.

Minister of Transport Trương Quang Nghĩa said that approach towards Uber solely aims to ensure that the transportation company’s operations in Vietnam comply with regulations.
