Vietnam spent USD4 billion on importing cars and car components in the first ten months of this year, the General Customs Department reported.

According to the department, Vietnam imported 52,000 cars worth a total USD1.2 billion, up 15% on-year, including 34 ones of below nine seats; meanwhile, the remaining USD3 billion was used for car component imports during the period.

The car import has increased sharply from July, particularly cars from Indonesia.

Among the total number of imported cars in the first ten months, Thailand topped with 36,600 with the majority of them having Japanese and American brands such as Honda, Nissan and Ford; followed by 10,300 from Indonesia with Japan’s Toyota and Suzuki accounting for the most.

Thailand and Indonesia have a quite high rate of localisation for cars of below nine seats with more than 40%.

Between January and October, the number of cars imported from Germany, South Korea and Japan was quite low at around 2,100, which was equal to just ten percent of that imported from Thailand and Indonesia.
