Coffee farmers in Gia Lai Province are taking on processing their own produce to earn more money as crops decline.

Farmers learn how to process coffee on their own

The 2018-2019 crop had seen a drop in both productivity and prices. The farmers had to plant other types of trees to offset the losses. One of the reasons for the price drop is because of the price squeeze from traders.

The farmers in Gia Lai then decided to process coffee beans on their own to earn as many profits as possible. Tran Xuan Huong from Ia Grai District said what he earned was not worth for reinvestment. According to Huong, after the price drop in the last crop, he kept all of the coffee beans in the inventory in order to practice processing coffee. As of now, he has sold 1,000 coffee bags.

"I have over 2ha of coffee which produces 6-8 tonnes of coffee each year," he said. "I learned how to process coffee beans on my own and directly sell them to the customers instead of going through another party."

Nguyen Thi Thao also from Ia Grai District said she invested a lot in processing equipment because of her passion for coffee and the dropping prices. However, not many farmers have been successful due to lack of knowledge about common standards and market demand.

"As traders often bargain down the prices, we have to save ourselves," Huong said. "But individuals can't compete with major chains and manufacturers so I hope the authorities will help us."

Tran Khac Ha, director of Production - Agriculture - Associated Services Co-operative, said they had 135 members with 210.7 ha of coffee. However, because the crops have declined in recent years, many farmers have planted other crops. The co-operative was formed in order to help the farmers connect with fertilizer, seedling firms and help them find an outlet.

"Huong's model has proved to be a success so we have helped expand the model," Ha said.

Nguyen Phung Hung, deputy head of Ia Grai Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said, "We are really glad and encouraged farmers to keep finding new solutions to help themselves. We’ll help them as much as we can."
