General Statistics Office announces employment data for the first six months


Statistics from the General Statistics Office of Vietnam showed that the number of employed people in the first six months of the year was significantly lower compared to 2019. The number of people over 15 years old and with jobs was 53 million people compared to 54.4 million in 2019.

The number of people with jobs in rural area dropped by 1.2 million, of which 877,400 people are female and 498,000 are male. The number of people with jobs in the agriculture, forestry and fishery sector was 17.6 million, a drop of 1.3 million people. The number of employed people in the industry and construction sectors was 16.3 million people, an increase of 178,600 people. The number of employed people in the service sector was 19.1 million people, a decrease of 257,100 people.

The monthly average income dropped slightly in the first six months to VND5.5m (USD237). The average incomes of male employees stood at VND6.4m compared to female employees' VND4.5m. The average income in urban areas was VND7.2m compared to the rural areas' VND4.7m.

Up to 1.2 million people in the working ages were laid off, 123,900 people higher than the same period last year. The unemployment rate was 2.47%, 1.14 times higher than last year. The unemployment rate among young people ageing from 15 to 24 years old was 7%. The young people's unemployment rate in urban areas was 10.45%.

The General Statistics Office of Vietnam proposed several solutions to boost the economy such as supporting packages for disadvantaged workers such as people with weak skills. Support packages for firms in hard-hit sectors like tourism and retail should be implemented more quickly. Local firms should change operations accordingly to survive and have training plans for their employees.
