The central city of Danang will take actions to reform its tourism sector for sustainable development, including the diversification of foreign visitor sources, said a local expert.

On Wednesday, vice chairman of the Danang People’s Committee Le Trung Chinh, worked with the municipal Department of Tourism on a plan to restructure the city’s tourism sector by 2025 and a vision until 2030.

According to Association Prof. Dr Pham Trung Luong, former deputy director of the Institute for Tourism Development and a member of the plan advisory group, over the recent years, the number of Chinese and South Korean tourists to Danang accounted for up to 70-80% of the city's total foreign visitors.

However, the domination of Chinese and South Korean travellers would pose a risk for the city’s tourism industry. In case these two markets face any negative impacts, the number of tourists to Danang would plummet. This is also the same problem for both Khanh Hoa and Quang Ninh provinces.

Under the plan, Danang’s rate of international and domestic visitors would be 50%-50% by 2025. Among those, foreign visitor sources would be diversified with Europe-North America with 20%; Northeast Asia with 57%; Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand with 20% and other markets with 3%.

To date, Danang’s hotel room number has reached more than 40,000, including up to 57% of hotels ranked from one to three stars. Luong suggested that the city needs to halt licensing the construction of accommodation facilities of between one and three stars.

According to the plan, besides the spearhead product of sea tourism, the city will focus on tours to visit some rivers such as Han, Cu De, Co Co and the areas around Son Tra Peninsula and Danang Bay along with ecological and community-based services.

The city will organise more festivals and cultural events to serve visitors.

Regarding the domestic market, Danang’s tourism will target visitors from the big cities of Hanoi, Haiphong and HC Mity and intensify the connection with the central provinces of Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Nam.
