PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc has asked chairman of Hai Phong City People’s Committee, Nguyen Van Tung, to quickly deal with the complaints from tourism firms in Cat Ba Island.

A document sent from the Government Office to the Hai Phong leader said that the PM received complaints from some tourism firms in Cat Ba Island in Cat Hai District about their eco-tourist facilities being asked to remove by the city authorities.

According to the complaints which were sent by six firms, the Hai Phong City People’s Committee recently asked businesses that are operating in Cat Ba National Forest to remove their eco-tourist constructions from the area, which would cause them big losses.

The six firms including Dong Kinh Trade and Services Investment Company, Tung Long, Thanh Binh, Cat Dua, TM Thuy Trang, and Dao Cat were among the first to invest in tourism in Cat Ba Island. They have built major facilities for eco-tourism on Lan Ha Bay since early days.

The firms said that eco-tourism facilities have been built in Cat Ba National Forest since 1998 after Hai Phong City People’s Committee agreed to pilot the model. The forest’s management board has been praised by the committee for having successfully carried out the model during 2010-1-2016.

A construction by architect Vo Trong Nghia won a gold prize at the Aga Khan Award for Architecture held in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2019.

All the facilities have been built in planed locations using environmental-friendly materials and there have been no reports on violations or forest destruction.

However, the Hai Phong City People’s Committee recently asked the firms to remove the facilities to restore forest in the area.

The firms said that they had moved their families to the island and invested hundreds of billions of VND in the projects following invitations for cooperation from leaders of the Hai Phong City People’s Committee as well as the national forest. Now the decision from the committee will cause them great losses.

A meeting held on March 25 on the decision between representatives from local concerned departments and agencies including the departments of Agriculture and Rural Development, Planning and Investment, Finance, Construction, Natural Resources and Environment, and the Cat Hai District People’s Committee concluded that there have not been enough grounds to remove the tourism construction works on Cat Ba National Forest.

However, leaders of the Hai Phong City People’s Committee insisted on the removal.

The PM asked Hai Phong chairman Nguyen Van Tung to quickly check the situation and give replies to the local firms.
