State President Truong Tan Sang has called on Vietnamese people to plant and protect forests for a sustainable ecological environment.

While launching a tree planting festival in Thanh Hoa on February 7, Sang said Vietnam is one of countries most vulnerable to climate change.

Vietnam has borne the brunt of ever increasing numbers of powerful storms, severe floods and flash floods over the years, causing huge property and human losses. Forest devastation is one of the underlying causes of environmental degradation.

Sang said forest planting and protection is an effective way of creating a clean and green environment for future generations.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reports in 2013 Vietnam planted 227,000ha of forests, and farmers were offered incentives to protect 4.2 million ha.

However, deforestation remains complex; forestation has yet to meet expectations; and farmers cannot live a stable life.
