Tan Son Nhat Airport faces flood risk
The drainage system at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in HCM City is being blocked.
Waste water from the airport is being discharged into Hi Vong, Nhat Ban and A41 canals. However, in the recent years, flooding has become a frequent problem and become a threat to the aviation safety as dozens flights were delayed or forced to land at other airports.
A41 Canal full of rubbish
Both domestic and construction rubbish are blocking canals and polluting the environment. Locals have also encroached on the canals to expand their houses. The Steering Centre for Urban Flood Control Programme of HCM City confirmed that a part of Nhat Ban Canal was blocked by construction rubbish and the canal section behind Vietnam Air Service Company (Vasco) looked like it would collapse any time.
Hi Vong Canal is also covered by many types of waste
The project to upgrade Hi Vong Canal was proposed in 2013 and urged to start as quickly as possible. But the city authorities only gave the project's design approval in 2016. The project was halted when the World Bank cancelled USD400m in funding for the HCM City Flood Risk Management Project.
The HCM City Steering Centre for Urban Flood Control wants the Southern Airport Authority to dredge the drainage system inside the airport and provide solutions to deal with encroached sections. In the long term, the Southern Airport Authority should upgrade the drainage system in line with the city's drainage system.
