VND20trn lost in 2018 to natural disasters
Natural disasters have caused VND20trn (USD856m) in losses and left 218 dead and missing across Vietnam in 2018.
Vietnam has had four cold snaps, 11 heat waves and 30 widespread heavy rains. It is estimated that natural disasters caused VND20trn in damage and left 218 dead and missing, lower than last year's VND60trn in losses and 386 dead and missing.
However, this year, there were early floods and surprisingly heavy rains.
The ministry has proposed to use VND1.5trn (USD64m) from the state budget and VND1trn from reserve funds for public investment plans for 2016-2020 period for natural disaster prevention projects.
They successfully asked for over VND1.1trn to support northern region and VND6.3trn with USD36m in ODA to reinforce dykes and embankments in the central region and Mekong Delta. Nearly 5,500 households were evacuated from danger zones.
However, there are many shortcomings in the forecasting and management as many local authorities still don't take their work seriously enough.
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong warned about being prepared in 2019 and asked local authorities to be more cautious in forecasting and better dealing with the public emergencies.
"Forecasting agencies should check their equipment, human resources and work with international organisations to improve their forecasting capacity," he said.
