Northern and central region to have severe heatwave
A severe heatwave is hitting the northern region this week.
Nam Dong in Thua Thien-Hue Province in the central region also experienced days of 37.6 degrees.
Because of the low-pressure area from the west and the foehn winds, Son La, Lai Chau, Dien Bien and Hoa Binh provinces, and the mountainous areas in the northern region and central coast have experienced temperatures ranging from 35 to over 37 degrees on May 10.
From May 11, the heatwave will continue to expand and the temperatures will range from 35 to 38 degrees. Provinces in the northwest and provinces from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien-Hue will have temperatures from 39 to 40 degrees. There will be 12-17 hours of plus-35 degree temperatures. The highest temperatures in Hanoi will be from 35 to 38 degrees.
However, it will feel even hotter depending on the location, the number of green spaces or lakes. Big cities like Hanoi suffer from the urban heat island effect so the average temperatures will be 3-5 degrees higher than rural areas. Warnings were also raised over the UV index in the northern and central regions.
Hoang Phuc Lam, deputy director of the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that the heatwave may last until May 16. The heatwave in May and this year summer, in general, are considered to be milder than last year.
