VPF's chairman Vo Quoc Thang confirmed that Tanabe would begin his two-year contract as consultant to the VPF's chairman on February 20.
Though his salary hasn't been disclosed, rumours suggest he will receive USD20,000 per month.
"With 20 years of experience, I believe Tanabe can help Vietnamese football develop," Thang said.
Tanabe will help the VPF develop strategies and financial policies. He will try to find at least four businesses to sponsor each club. With Tanabe's vast relations in Japan, it is thought he can bring significant changes to Vietnam football via Japanese sponsors.
Thang said, "This is the second year that the VPF will be responsible for administrating the domestic tournaments. Although we’re facing difficulties due to the state of the domestic economy, we should still be able to develop and improve Vietnam football."
The VPF also signed contracts with the J-League, which should see Japanese officials providing technical support to Vietnamese football.
He further said other sectors could would also profits from this collaboration.
