Vietnam have been placed in Group C along with Italy, Paraguay and Guatemala at the upcoming 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup, according to the team grouping held in Colombia on May 20.

Vietnam (in red) made a splash in world futsal history by beating Japan last February to book a place in the Futsal World Cup.

The world’s largest futsal event, scheduled to take place from September 10 to October 1, will bring together a total of 24 teams, with Colombia automatically qualifying as hosts and the other 23 teams qualifying from six separate continental competitions.

Another representative of Southeast Asia, Thailand join Russia, Egypt and Cuba in Group B, while Group A is made up of Colombia, Portugal, Uzbekistan and Panama.

Group D sees the presence of Ukraine, Brazil, Mozambique and Australia, while Argentina, Kazakhstan, Solomon Islands and Costa Rica will compete in Group E. Group F consists of Iran, Spain, Morocco and Azerbaijan.

The teams will play in a round-robin tournament, with the top two teams of each group and the four best third-placed teams advancing to the round of 16.

Vietnam are to face Guatemala in their opener on September 11 before taking on Paraguay and Italy on September 14 and 17, respectively.

In preparation for the World Cup mission, members of the Vietnam national futsal team will participate in a domestic training course from July 21 to August 16 before leaving for overseas training in Spain and Peru.

Earlier in February, Vietnam secured a berth in the Futsal World Cup after beating powerhouses Japan 2-1 in a tense penalty shootout in the quarterfinals of the 2016 AFC Futsal Championship, hosted in Uzbekistan.
