The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) is looking for a new head coach of the national football team after terminating Frenchman Philippe Troussier’s contract on March 26.

The contract was terminated following the team’s 0-3 defeat to Indonesia in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier in Hanoi on Tuesday night. Both sides reached an agreement at the meeting and Troussier ended his one-year tenure in charge of the Vietnamese national football team with the worst win rate of any coach in the country’s history at just 31 percent.

Some sources said the VFF plans to talk to former national U23 manager Hoang Anh Tuan about taking temporary charge of the national team following Troussier's departure.

Tuan was previously the scout and head coach of the U20 team that won a slot at the 2017 U20 World Cup.

He was also the first coach of the U23 team that won the historic silver medal at the Asian Championship in 2018.

In recent years, Tuan has been working with youth teams. He took the U20s to compete at the Asian championship and the Asian Games in 2023.

If negotiations are successful, Tuan will take the U23s to a training camp early next month and compete at the Qatar Asian Championship from April 15 to May 3.

Vietnamese supporters also suggested several candidates for the position, including former chief coach Park Hang-seo, Vietnamese coach Hoang Anh Tuan, Thai legend Kiatisuk Senamuang, former Vietnam U23 coach Gong Oh Kyun, and Hai Phong FC’s coach Chu Dinh Nghiem.

Iraq retained top position in Group F after four successive wins, while Indonesia remained in second with seven points. Vietnam are in third position with only three points, and their chances of progressing through to the third round of the World Cup Qualifiers are now very slim, as they are due to play the Philippines and Iraq in June.

Only the top two of the group go through to the third qualifying round according to FIFA regulations.

After the latest loss to Indonesia, Vietnam has dropped 115th in FIFA rankings, their worst position in eight years.
