Vietnam wins grand prize in American photo contest

The photo entitled ‘Sewing the fishing net’ by Vietnamese photographer Pham Ty has won the Grand Prize at the 12th annual photo contest launched by American magazine Smithsonian.

The photograph captures the image of two women becoming entangled in the fabric of a fishing net - the primary tool of their livelihood - in Vinh Hy Bay, Ninh Thuan province.

This year’s event has attracted more than 26,000 photos from 93 countries and territories around the world.

The entries have competed in six categories including Natural World, Travel, People, The American Experience, Altered Images and Mobile.

In addition to the Grand Prize, four other photos by Vietnamese photographers, including Ly Hoang Long, Hoang The Nhiem, Tran Viet Phuong and Nguyen Trang, entered the final rounds of Travel, People and Altered Images categories.

Smithsonian is one of the largest magazines in America providing knowledge, breaking news and innovation achievements of history, science, travel, arts and culture.
