Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam delivered a keynote address at the opening in which he dilated on the country's scientific development over the past few years and his vision for what is on the horizon.
The Deputy Prime Minister said it is one thing to know all these great, abstract concepts, but being able to translate that into a form that benefits society in a way that other people can understand should be the ultimate goal.
Science should be useful and make a difference in people's everyday lives, he said, which is the hallmark of great scientists.
Nobel laureate Ngo Bao Chau, a Vietnamese-French mathematician and professor at the University of Chicago, best known for proving the fundamental lemma for automorphic forms proposed by Robert Langlands and Diana Shelstad is attending the conference.
In addition, Professor Dam Thanh Son, also a Nobel laureate and member of the faculty of the University of Chicago, is in attendance.
