Haiphong student honoured for international maths prize

Authorities in the northern city of Haihong have awarded VND500 million (USD21,739) to a local student who won the gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad 2019.

The awardee is Nguyen Thuan Hung from Tran Phu High School for Gifted Students.

Teacher Le Duc Thinh who directly teaches Hung was also presented with a bonus of VND250 million.

Hung is among two students of the six-member Vietnamese delegation to receive the gold prize at the International Mathematical Olympiad 2019 which was held in the UK on July 15-22. The event saw the participation of 110 countries.

Meanwhile, the four other students of the team bagged silver medals.

According to Nguyen Xuan Truong, director of the Haiphong Department of Education and Training, this was the first time a Haiphong student had won a prize in 24 years of competition

Earlier, Hung obtained the first prize of maths in the city’s contest and the second prize for the national maths competition.

The bonus given to Hung is part of Haiphong’s efforts to encourage talented people.

Municipal authorities hope that Hung will continue his efforts and contribute to the development of Haiphong City.

Hung plans to study at Hanoi National University of Education.
