A herd of more than 30 wild elephants are roaming in the Yok Don National Park in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak, knocking down demarcation poles and causing damage to 10 hectares of corns grown by local residents.

Nguyen Quoc Lap, head of the Forestry Protection Station No. 11 of the Park, said the elephants were first found in a strictly-protected area of the park several days ago and seem to have come from some area around the Vietnamese-Cambodian border.

Lap said wild elephants crossed the border every year but this herd is much larger.

Ho Van Cau, deputy director of the park, said the forest management unit in Yok Don is working on a plan to protect these elephants, which are roaming in various zones in the Park for food.

Local residents living near the Park have been warned about the appearance of the wild animals to take safety measures, he said.
