The work is scheduled to last for four months.

Hanoi to start dredging Hoan Kiem Lake from late July

According to the company director Vo Tien Hung, Hoan Kiem Lake is seriously polluted and has lost the ability to clean itself.

The lake water has worsened as several sections have lost its iconic green colour, even turning quite red. The mud at the bottom of the lake is around a metre deep, containing heavy metals and high algae density.

The water quality has considerably fallen, estimated at 0.5-0.8 metres at some sections with a high pH level of between 9.05 and 9.46 but low oxygen, Hung added.

Hanoi Sewerage and Drainage Limited Company plans to remove mud and waste at the lake bottom and after that will pour water from wells into the lake. Redoxy 3C will be used for improving the water quality.

The company has asked scientists to research the character of the green algae on the lake to preserve those that serve a useful function, said Hung.
