East Sea is running out of fish
Over-exploitation in the East Sea is decimating fish stocks which may not be able to recover.
Vice head of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam Le Hai Binh said fisheries management had become an important problem. Current fish stocks account for only 5% of the fish stocks recorded in 1990 due to over-exploitation, destructive and illegal fishing. The fish stock can affect lives of millions of people in various countries and how United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 is implemented.
Vu Thanh Ca from the Vietnam Administration of Seas and Islands also blamed China for destroying coral reefs while constructing artificial islands, causing USD5bn damage. He went on to say that disputes were preventing countries from collaborating to deal with the problem in the most effective ways.
Dr Ha Anh Tuan from the East Sea Institute said due to sea disputes that the definition of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing had blurred and hindered management. Several ideas have been proposed to better manage the illegal and unregulated fishing but nothing has been approved.
Peter Girke, representative of Konrad Adenauer Stiftung in Vietnam said every country must work together to balance national interests and prevent the fish stock from depleting.
