North braced for Jekyll and Hyde weather

The northern region will suffer a mini heat wave before being hit by a cold spell next week.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorology Forecasting, due to the low pressure from the west, temperatures in the northern region, especially in Lai Chau, Dien Bien and Son La provinces, will reach 37 degrees on April 13. Hanoi and some eastern provinces will have lower temperatures of 31 to 33 degrees during the day and 18-21 degrees at night from April 12 to 14.

The central region will have fog in the early morning and but clear skies by noon. The temperatures will stay around 27-31 degrees. However, the mountainous area on the west will be hotter with 33 degrees.

The heat in the southern region will get harsher. The temperature on April 10 in Long Khanh, Dong Nai Province reached 37 degrees. HCM City, Binh Phuoc and Binh Duong Tay Ninh provinces also had a temperature of 35-37 degrees.

But starting from April 15, a cold spell will arrive and have a major effect on the northern region. It will cause rains and make the temperatures drop to 9 degrees. Average temperatures during the day in Hanoi will fall to 24 degrees.

Provinces from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien-Hue will also have rain but the temperatures are set to remain at 29-32 degrees. The heat in the Central Highlands and southern region will only increase.

Strong winds and waves are forecast to the ships working in the Gulf of Tonkin until April 14.
