Cold spells predicted for late January

Several cold spells will arrive in the northern region in late January but the temperatures will be higher than in previous years, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

There may be a chance for a new strong cold spell in the first ten days of the new year. The temperature will actually increase from January 3 and only drop to a lower level at night and in the early mornings. This may be accompanied by light rains in the mornings.

Overall, the average temperature in Vietnam will be 1-2.5 degrees higher than in previous years. The average temperatures in the delta will be around 20-27 degrees. It is predicted that the rainfall from January 11 to 20 in the northern region will be 10-30% higher than in previous years while the rainfall level will be 40-70% lower than normal in other regions.

The northern region will have rains from January 10 to 20 and four to five strong cold spells may arrive during this time period. However, the temperatures will drop the lowest in mountainous areas.

The Central Highlands and the southern region were warned of drought and saltwater intrusion. From January 8 to 13, the transfer of heat between areas of different temperature may cause rains in the southern region. The central region will have rains from January 1 to 3. Heavy rains are forecasted for provinces from Quang Binh to Quang Ngai.
