Five people die, two injured in Ha Giang flooding

Five people have been killed and two others injured in the worst flooding in nearly 60 years in the northern mountainous province of Ha Giang.

The Ha Giang Provincial National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control reported that as of 8 am on Wednesday, at least five people had died in the flooding, including three children, while two others were injured.


Flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rains also damaged over 3,000 houses, buried machinery and equipment at two hydro-power plants in the province, while 33 roads were submerged or blocked by landslides in Ha Giang City, the report said.

Total assets losses have been estimated at about VND80 billion (USD3.5 million)

According to the director of the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, Hoang Phuc Lam, Ha Giang Province saw heavy rains that lasted from Monday to Tuesday with the rainwater level measured at between 100 mm and 300 mm in 24 hours.

"In Ha Giang City, the rainwater was recorded at 247 mm a day," he said. "This is the highest rainwater level recorded since 1961."
