The Indian government has funded a total USD350,000 for four provinces in the Mekong Delta region to respond to saline instruction.

Under the agreement signed in Can Tho City on September 23, the financial support will be used for the provinces of Ben Tre, Hau Giang, Kien Giang and Tien Giang.

The agreement on the funding signed in Can Tho City on September 23.

The funding is aimed to assist the localities in carrying out seven projects in water resource management activities, including the construction of new irrigation systems and reservoirs, the drinking water supply and the water container purchase for local residents.

Each project costs USD50,000.

The agreement is part of a total of 26 projects funded by India in 22 cities and provinces in Vietnam.

Mekong Delta provinces have experienced the most severe drought and saline intrusion ever in the 2019-2020 dry season. Saline intrusion in 2016 lasted about two months and only two communes in Ben Tre were not affected, while this year saline intrusion lasted much longer and the whole Mekong Delta region has been submerged under water.

By the end of June this year, about 41,900 ha or 2.7% the total winter-spring rice crop in the region was damaged by the saline intrusion.
