The saline intrusion has caused the erosion of dozens of metres deep for Cua Dai Beach which was a popular tourist destination. The situation has worsened following recent consecutive storms.
Downpours and strong waves triggered by Storm Vamco have demolished an embankment supported by thousands of sandbags.
The owner of Bien Dua Restaurant said that the typhoon had demolished the restaurant’s concrete embankment. Fewer tourists have come to Cua Dai Beach and many local restaurants have been relocated, he added.
The saline intrusion has ruined coconut trees and dozens of restaurants at An Bang Beach in Cam An Town despite consolidation efforts by local business owners.
According to Le Van Biet, a resident from Cam An Town, An Bang Beach’s erosion has become more serious, especially so far this year. His home is now just 50 metres from the beach. If the situation does not improve, his family does not know where to live.
“I’ve been living here for nearly 40 years, but I have never seen such adverse erosion,” Biet moaned.

Nguyen The Hung, vice chairman of Hoi An People’s Committee admitted the erosion for the 8-km coast from An Bang to Cua Dai beaches.
It is easy to see modern hotels and resorts by Hoi An beach left unused due to being eroded.
Nguyen Minh Hoang, a traveller from Hanoi, said that it was regretful for nice beaches in Hoi An to be adversely devastated.
