Thanh Hoa firms fined for pollution and fish death

Two firms in Thanh Hoa Province have been fined for releasing untreated wastewater into a local river which has caused mass fish deaths.

  

Untreated wastewater discharged into the environment


Le Duc Giang, vice chairman of Thanh Hoa People's Committee issued the fine on September 21 to Ngoc Son Seafood Processing Company in Tan Hai Village, Hai Binh Ward and Long Hai Seafood Processing and Trade Transportation in Tien Phong Village, Hai Binh Ward.

Ngoc Son Company’s discharged wastewater showed many indicators exceeding the technical regulation on waste thresholds. The company discharged about 11 cubic metres of untreated wastewater into Lach Bang River a day. Ngoc Son Company was fined a total of VND882m (USD38,500). They must take measures to deal with environmental pollution, and invest in waste treatment systems.

Long Hai Company also discharged 20-40 cubic metres of wastewater that exceeded waste thresholds into the Lach Bang every day. The company was fined a total of VND104m (USD4,500) and asked to deal with environmental pollution and review its waste treatment system.

In July, a large number of caged fish raised along Lach Bang River died suddenly. The investigation showed that Ngoc Son and Long Hai companies had been discharging untreated wastewater into Lach Bang River daily.

After testing the water samples from Long Hai Company, the authorities detected that the biological oxygen demand (BOD5) indicator was 2.86 times higher than allowed. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) indicator was 1.56 times higher and the ammonium was 1.1 times higher than allowed.

The samples from Ngoc Son Company had the BOD5 indicator 141.1 times higher than allowed. The COD was 89,8 times higher and the ammonium was 58.5 times higher than allowed.
