Up to 300 tonnes of fish farmed on Thai Binh River in the northern province of Hai Duong have died.

The massive wave of fish deaths was discovered over the past week. The fish were from Thanh Ha, Chi Linh, Nam Sach and Tu Ky districts and Hai Duong City’s Tien Tien Commune.

The fish were found dead in Thai Binh River and drifted into the Kinh Thay and Sat rivers.

Environmental workers gathered the dead fish from the Sat River on Sunday. Most of the fish were groupers and red snappers weighing 3-7 kilos.

Excavators were used to help dispose of the fish.

The Fisheries Department and the Research Institute for Aquaculture I under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development sent staff to Hai Duong. The delegation took water samples for testing. According to the results, the dissolved oxygen concentration in the water was very low, while the level of toxic gases was high.

According to Hai Duong Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Director Bui Van Thang, investigations will continue to discover the reason for the low oxygen concentration.

Hai Duong Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has urged fish breeders to closely monitor weather forecasts and deal with sudden weather changes. When the water becomes turbid, fish show poor appetite or swim slowly or float to the surface, at which point it is essential to take measures such as increasing oxygen and changing water.

When river water levels reduce, households need to lower the fish cages to avoid oxygen deficiency and disinfect to prevent diseases.
