Yen So Fish Market in Hanoi’s Hoang Mai District is busier ahead of the Kitchen Gods' Day.

Yen So is the largest fish market in Hanoi. Red carp are transported from provinces and cities, including Nam Dinh, Vinh Phuc, Phu Tho and Hung Yen, so that on Kitchen Gods’ Day on the 23rd of the last month of the lunar year, which falls on January 25 this year, people will have enough fish available.

Traders take red carp from Yen So for selling at different markets in Hanoi.

According to traders, red carp prices are lower than last year, at VND220,000-250,000 (USD9.48-10.77) per kilo. Each red carp is priced at between VND10,000-15,000.

People often buy three red carps for Kitchen God’s Day worship.

Traders select the strongest fish for the sale.

The wholesale traders can sell hundreds of kilos of red carp per day.

The 21st and 22nd day of the 12th lunar month is the most bustling time for Yen So Fish Market.

The Vietnamese believe there are three Kitchen Gods in their houses, and carp serve as their means of transport to heaven so they can report to the Jade Emperor. According to the tradition, after prayers to the Kitchen Gods have been made, people release carp into ponds, lakes and rivers.
