Mud and red soil from a controversial tourism resort project in Danang City’s Son Tra District has polluted the local beach.

The project carried out by Tien Sa Joint Stock Company includes 40 villas in Son Tra Peninsular. The mud and soil have been resulted from levelling and digging the ground for resort construction over the past months.

Red soil and mud pollute Tien Sa beach in Danang City

The resort project has begun construction without local authority approval and local authorities had not been aware of the violation until recently.

On the morning of July 4, a great amount of mud and red soil were found at Tien Sa Beach, said Ho Duy Diem, head of Danang City’s planning board.

Huynh Van Hung, Son Tra District’s chief office manager, said that local authorities are inspecting the project’s implementation.

Earlier, the government approved a plan to develop Son Tra District into a national tourism site by 2025. The district is expected to welcome 3.5 million tourists by 2025 and 4.6 million in 2030.

However, many people worry about how projects are being conducted and its impact on the environment.

Huynh Tan Vinh, Chairman of Danang Tourism Association, said that Son Tra was the green lung of Danang City.

He said that “What should we choose, building resorts on Son Tra or keeping it as a wild tourist destination?” and he will try his best to protect Son Tra.

Following the public concerns, the government has requested a temporary halt for Son Tra Peninsular planning as a national tourism site for more careful consideration.
