Investment procedures to build a toxic chemical project near Ha Long Bay have been completed, which has stirred public concerns over the pollution risk to the world heritage site.

The project which has a design capacity of 20,000 tonnes of soda and other chemicals such as Poly Aluminum Chloride (PAC) and Javen is located at Viet Hung Industrial Park. It is located near the gate of Cua Luc River which discharges directly into Ha Long Bay.

Pham Dinh Huynh, management head of Ha Long Bay, said that it is important to take careful consideration for the location of the project. If the project faces any environmental problems Ha Long Bay will be directly effected. This will result in a great loss for Quang Ninh Province’s tourism sector.

Huynh took Ninh Binh Province as an example, adding that the province decided to remove a cement project out of Trang An, also a world heritage site, to avoid environmental risks.

The soda production project near Ha Long Bay invested in by Tan Tien Company was licensed in 2006.

In a report to assess the project’s environmental impact, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment warned the province about the project’s possibility of chemical leakage into the environment.
