Hanoi sees magnitude 4.0 earthquake

A 4.0 magnitude earthquake occurred in Hanoi’s outlying district of My Duc on Monday morning.

According to the Institute of Geophysics (IGP), the earthquake occurred at 8.05 am with its epicentre, about 16km deep, at 20.770 degrees North and 105.720 degrees East.

Many residents at the quake’s centre said that they could feel tremors.

Truong Van Trinh in Noi Xuy Xa Commune, My Duc District said he was having breakfast at home and felt a strong shake.

"I saw furniture shaking for about 4-5 seconds," Trinh said. "I then rushed out onto the road and some other people who also said they felt things shaking and they had felt nauseous."

Trinh said similar incidents had occurred in his area previously.

Luu Thanh Hai in Dong Da District, some 40 kilometres from the epicentre said that he and some other colleagues also felt furniture shaking in their office at around 8 am on Monday.

"We didn't know what was happening," Hai said. "Then we heard about the earthquake."

Some people in other districts including Cau Giay, Hai Ba Trung, and Thanh Xuan District also reported that they felt the quakes two or three times on Monday morning.

The Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Centre is still monitoring this earthquake.

Two other quakes measuring 3.2 and 3.7 on the Richter Scale were also reported in the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum's Kon Plong District at 3:54 am and 5:57 am, respectively, on Monday. Their epicentre was about 8.10 km deep, at 14.957 degrees North and 108.237 degrees East.

Earthquakes have repeatedly occurred in Kon Plong District since 2021. The strongest, recorded at 4.70 on the Richter Scale, was recorded on the afternoon of August 23, 2022.
